TRAVELLING EXHIBITIONS

• The jury has declared Jordi Martoranno, with the project “Forms in Correspondence”, and Jordi Urbón, with “Carmen, Delirium or the Hero”, the winners.

• The jury selected two contrasting projects so that the Travelling Exhibitions programme can tour two complementary exhibitions. In short, the two projects represent two different artistic approaches to understanding everyday life, through abstraction and hyperrealism.

• One of these two exhibitions is expected to begin touring exhibition venues throughout the Girona counties from September onwards.

The winners of the 2012–2013 call for the Travelling Exhibitions programme have now been announced. The jury, which met on Tuesday, 24 April, declared Jordi Martoranno, with the project “Forms in Correspondence”, and Jordi Urbón, with “Carmen, Delirium or the Hero”, the winners.

A total of fifteen projects were submitted by artists from across the Girona counties. Most of them focused on painting techniques (oil, acrylic, mixed media or collage), although sculpture was also represented.

When selecting the winning proposals, the jury chose two projects that differ in style and form of expression, allowing the Travelling Exhibitions programme to tour two fully complementary exhibitions. The jury also placed particular value on quality, the construction of a clear narrative thread, and the ability of each project to adapt to the requirements of the different exhibition spaces.

The Winning Projects

Jordi Martoranno, with “Forms in Correspondence”. The artist’s pictorial project is a journey through the forms of the universe and the unity of humankind. From the perspective of everyday life, it explores the attitudes and ways in which individuals feel, perceive and experience life. The exhibition consists of drawings and paintings (oil on canvas) in different formats and focuses on the evolution of the visual language that the artist has developed from real forms and traces that transport us into an abstract universe.

The jury highlighted the coherence and consistency of the project, both in terms of the artistic quality of the works it comprises and because it develops around a clear, unambiguous and entirely genuine discourse.

The artistic vocation of Jordi Martoranno (Girona, 1965) began in 1980 at Isidre Vicens’s painting studio. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he continued painting and began working with printmaking techniques, sculpture and other artistic disciplines. Since 1981, he has participated in group exhibitions and, since 1984, in solo exhibitions.

Jordi Urbón, with “Carmen, Delirium or the Hero”. The project represents a new working process that the artist has been developing in recent years and which he himself calls digital painting. Urbón creates his own personal portrait of everyday life through a range of distinctive characters; the artist uses their charisma to give narrative force to each story he wishes to tell and to imbue it with hyperreality.

The jury selected this project as one of the two winners for its originality —particularly in terms of its working process—; for its willingness and ability to transcend the traditional concept of painting; and for having succeeded in preserving the essential nature of this art form while developing an autonomous visual language.

Jordi Urbón (Puigcerdà, 1962) began his training at the School of Art and Higher School of Design in Vic. He also worked in the studios of Begoña Egurbide, Ramon Parramon and Xavier Rovira, and complemented his training with courses in engraving, photoengraving and screen printing at the School of Arts and Artistic Crafts in Vic and at Fina Tuneu’s studio. He lives in Ripoll.
