Jordi Urbón comes to art because he wants to capture souls; has art not, perhaps, throughout its entire history, been this special instrument? Yet what has actually been sought to capture was the body, the vessel of the soul, because without this envelope it had no meaning; indeed, man existed because he was “a reality”. But now we are fully aware that we exist because we are sensations and feelings, and these, directly, are very difficult to retain.

Urbón’s determining factors are: a highly sensitive disposition, particularly open to whatever may affect the spirit —one of the stirrings of the soul—, prompting immediate reactions, and the need for processes suited to responses that demand rapid execution, such as the technique of encaustic painting, which allows for and requires an aptitude for sudden response, where the material expression and the gestural incision act almost in unison; and collage, which allows for spontaneous, progressive gestures, without the need to retrace one’s steps or make subsequent additions.
